Both my girlfriend and I are dog lovers. We have both comes from homes that have had dogs.
We have wanted a dog for a while because of this and because it fits well with our lifestyle of being in the outdoors be it walking, camping etc. However I always felt we needed to wait a bit longer until we were sure as they are a massive commitment.
Having spent the last couple of years together without one we are now ready to take on the challenge of our own dog.
We have had countless discussions over which breed to get. We both loved Siberian Husky’s but such a breed was just not suitable, nor was a more tame cross breed. They require constant attention, more than most breeds due to their pack mentality. Whilst all dogs have this, many require less attention.
I had a thing about having what I call a ‘proper’ dog. By that I mean a bigger, more masculine dog. Not to say smaller dogs are not proper but I just feel that if you are going to have a dog, have one that can’t be carried in a handbag (my personal opinion). I too wanted a dog with a longer coat.
My girlfriend on the other hand wasn’t too fussed about the size but wanted a short haired dog.
So after weeks of discussion and reading (no rushed decisions…more of that in another post) we settled on what was an agreed compromise. A Labrador.
By no means was this a 2nd choice it was our 1st choice of what we agreed on and felt was suitable.
Now you may say a Labrador is common and yes they are but they have so many good traits, most importantly they are a great all-round dog and are more suitable for families which is important for us over the coming years!
So decision made, more on the next steps in future posts.
